Biography

Monobloco is a renowned Brazilian carnival bloc and musical group originating from Rio de Janeiro, founded in the year 2000 by members of Pedro Luís e a Parede. The group began as a percussion workshop designed to teach individuals without prior musical experience how to play samba instruments, eventually evolving into a massive street band that incorporates a diverse array of rhythms such as marchinha, coco, funk, xote, ciranda, and charm, rather than traditional samba alone. Over the years, Monobloco grew significantly in popularity, drawing hundreds of thousands of revellers to their annual post-carnival parades in Copacabana and downtown Rio de Janeiro under the direction of maestro Celso Alvim.

In addition to their massive carnival presence, Monobloco performs year-round through their smaller touring ensemble known as Monobloco Show, featuring professional musicians such as Celso Alvim, Mário Moura, Sidon Silva, C.A Ferrari, and Pedro Luís. The group has released several notable albums and DVDs, including their self-titled debut, their live recordings, and collaborative projects featuring artists like Elba Ramalho. They have also expanded their reach internationally, conducting percussion workshops and performing at festivals across countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Denmark.

Through its extensive educational workshops and vibrant stage performances, Monobloco has established itself as a major pillar of contemporary Brazilian carnival culture. Their ability to merge traditional percussion techniques with eclectic musical genres has cemented their legacy alongside other prominent figures in Brazilian popular music and carnival traditions.
