Biography

Wagner Domingues Costa, better known as Mr. Catra, was born in Rio de Janeiro and built a multifaceted career as a singer, songwriter, and lawyer. He began his musical career in the 1980s as a member of the rock band O Beco, before becoming deeply involved with the rap and funk carioca scene in the following decades, when he founded the record label and production company Rapsoulfunk alongside Primo Preto.

Throughout his career, Mr. Catra collaborated with various prominent figures in Brazilian music, such as MV Bill, Valesca Popozuda, the group Exaltasamba, and Bonde da Stronda, in addition to branching out into genres ranging from proibidão and parody funk to heavy metal with his project Mr. Catra e os Templários. His lyrics with strong social and humorous appeal generated both enormous popularity and legal controversies throughout his artistic journey.

The artist passed away in September 2018, at the age of 49, as a result of complications arising from stomach cancer. He left a striking legacy in Brazilian popular culture, remembered both for his irreverence and for his influence on the consolidation of national funk and hip hop.
