Biography

Antônio Carlos Bernardes Gomes, better known by his stage name Mussum, was a renowned Brazilian comedian, musician, actor, and composer, born in Rio de Janeiro. He began his highly prominent journey in the music scene as a percussionist and reco-reco player in the renowned group Os Originais do Samba, gaining notoriety and international recognition before transitioning to television.

Alongside key names in national culture such as Almir Guineto, he helped introduce the Brazilian banjo, shaping sounds that would strongly echo in the pagodes of the following decades. His popularity and magnetic charisma led him to join the famous comedy quartet Os Trapalhões, alongside Renato Aragão, Dedé Santana, and Zacarias, marking an era on Brazilian television and becoming one of the few prominent Black comedians in the media during the 1980s.

In addition to his indelible contribution to humor and Brazilian popular music, Mussum left an eternal legacy associated with his passion for Estação Primeira de Mangueira and samba culture. His image and good-humored vocabulary remain alive in the collective memory and pop culture through countless memes and posthumous tributes, cementing his status as a popular Brazilian icon.
