Biography
Grupo Muzenza is a renowned capoeira institution, founded on May 5, 1972, in Rio de Janeiro, by Paulo Sérgio da Silva, known as Mestre Paulão. Since 1975, the group has been led by Mestre Burguês (Antônio Carlos de Menezes), who expanded its operations throughout Brazil and internationally. Muzenza stands out for its methodology and philosophy, which seek the roots of capoeira, promoting it as an art, fight, culture, and philosophy of life. The group has a strong commitment to social transformation and inclusion, operating in communities, schools, and cultural events. Its proposal is to spread capoeira based on values such as respect, discipline, and freedom of expression, training new professionals and conscious citizens. Muzenza's work also extends to music, with the release of albums that celebrate Afro-Brazilian culture and rhythms such as samba-reggae, influenced by Jamaican reggae. Artists like Daniela Mercury, Margareth Menezes, and Carlinhos Brown have interpreted songs linked to the Muzenza universe, highlighting the relevance of its artistic expression.
The term "Muzenza" has Bantu-Kikongo origins and refers to initiates in Angolan candomblé, also known as "iaô" in Ketu candomblé. This connection to Afro-Brazilian spirituality is one of the pillars of the group, which seeks to preserve and value ancestry and Black identity. The song "Muzenza," popularized by Margareth Menezes, addresses themes of resistance, ancestry, and the importance of the terreiro as a space for celebration and struggle.
Grupo Muzenza de Capoeira is not limited to the practice of capoeira, but also develops important socio-educational work. In partnership with various institutions, the group offers training and professional development workshops for young people, contributing to personal and social development. Its work transcends the borders of carnival and folkloric manifestations, consolidating itself as a vibrant and engaged cultural entity.
