Biography

Nação Zumbi is a Brazilian musical group formed in the early 1990s in Recife, Pernambuco, initially under the name Chico Science & Nação Zumbi. Born from the fusion of the post-punk band Loustal and the samba-reggae group Lamento Negro, the band was led by charismatic vocalist and songwriter Chico Science. Alongside Mundo Livre S/A, they spearheaded the influential manguebeat cultural movement, which blended traditional regional rhythms like maracatu with rock, hip hop, and electronic music while emphasizing social awareness and futuristic aesthetics. Their seminal albums Da Lama ao Caos and Afrociberdelia achieved gold status and are widely celebrated as masterpieces of Brazilian music, featuring collaborations with legends like Gilberto Gil and Jorge Ben Jor.

Following the tragic death of Chico Science in a car accident in 1997, the band reinvented itself simply as Nação Zumbi, with longtime member Jorge Du Peixe taking over lead vocals. Despite the immense loss of their founder, the group continued to release acclaimed albums and maintain an active international touring schedule, cementing their legacy as one of the most innovative and enduring forces in Brazilian rock. Over the decades, their unique sound has left a profound mark on the national music scene, influencing diverse acts such as Planet Hemp, O Rappa, Sepultura, and Cássia Eller.
