Biography
Aguinaldo Caldeira, known as Nadinho da Ilha, was a prominent Brazilian singer, composer, percussionist, and actor. Born on June 11, 1934, in Rio de Janeiro, he hailed from the Morro do Borel in the Tijuca neighborhood. His musical journey began at a young age, influenced by his uncle Nilo Chagas, a member of the renowned Trio de Ouro. Nadinho's talent was recognized early on by composer Geraldo Pereira, who brought him to play the pandeiro on his radio show at the age of 12. This early exposure to samba rhythms honed his percussive skills. He also performed as a singer in Heitor dos Prazeres' group alongside other notable samba artists like Mestre Marçal and later joined the composers' wing of the Unidos da Tijuca samba school. Beyond his musical career, Nadinho da Ilha also ventured into acting, appearing in theater productions such as "Deus lhe pague" by Procópio Ferreira and "Ópera do malandro" by Chico Buarque, as well as television shows like "Buzina do Chacrinha" and "Tem criança no samba." His powerful voice, stage presence, and unique, humorous interpretation of samba made him a versatile artist. Nadinho da Ilha passed away on August 4, 2009, due to complications from diabetes and abdominal cancer. Nadinho da Ilha's discography includes ten singles and eleven LPs, along with numerous collaborations with esteemed artists such as Monarco, Beth Carvalho, and Dona Ivone Lara. His 1977 album "Cabeça feita," produced by João de Aquino, was highly acclaimed and reissued in 2003. He also lent his voice to samba-enredo records, notably for his beloved Unidos da Tijuca in 1980. In 2005, he released "Meu amigo Geraldo Pereira," a tribute to his mentor. His final album, "O Samba bem humorado de Nadinho da Ilha," was released in 1999.
