Biography
Dinahir Tostes Caymmi, known worldwide as Nana Caymmi, was one of the most sophisticated and technically acclaimed voices in Brazilian popular music. The daughter of legendary composer Dorival Caymmi and singer Stella Maris, Nana was born into a deeply musical environment in Rio de Janeiro. Her professional career began in 1960 when she recorded the track 'Acalanto', composed by her father, in a duet that marked the beginning of a seven-decade trajectory. Throughout the 1960s, she solidified her presence in festivals and television programs, winning the national phase of the 1st International Song Festival with the song 'Saveiros', by her brother Dori Caymmi and Nelson Motta.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Nana alternated periods of great success in the Argentine market with moments of introspection and fundamental partnerships in Brazil. She worked alongside names like Milton Nascimento, who composed the song 'Cais' especially for her, and Ivan Lins. Her interpretation is frequently described as visceral and emotional, which led her to be compared to great international jazz divas, although her roots were firmly planted in samba-canção and bossa nova. The partnership with pianist César Camargo Mariano on the album 'Voz e Suor' is considered one of the high points of her discography, highlighting her dynamic control and unique expressiveness.
In the 1990s, Nana Caymmi experienced an explosion of massive popularity after having her songs included in TV Globo telenovela soundtracks. The album 'Bolero' (1993) and the hit 'Resposta ao Tempo', by Cristóvão Bastos and Aldir Blanc, the theme song of the miniseries 'Hilda Furacão', turned her into a record-breaking seller. Nana remained active until her final years, dedicating herself to themed albums that paid homage to composers like Tito Madi and the duo Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. The artist passed away in May 2025, in Rio de Janeiro, leaving a legacy of elegance and artistic rigor that positions her as one of the greatest interpreters in the history of MPB.
