Biography

Neide Mariarrosa, born Neide Maria Rosa in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, on April 11, 1936, was a prominent singer, radio actress, and announcer in Brazilian popular music. She began her artistic career at age 13, participating in a newcomer contest on Rádio Guarujá, the first radio station in her hometown. Quickly, her vocal talent and interpretive skills made her well known in the region, leading her to also work at Rádio Diário da Manhã, where she acted as a singer, radio actress, and announcer in the 1950s and 1960s. Her powerful voice and ability to create up to four distinct characters in the same radio soap opera caught the attention of Elizeth Cardoso, a renowned national singer, who encouraged her to pursue a career in Rio de Janeiro in 1962.

Upon moving to the capital of Rio de Janeiro state in 1964, Neide Mariarrosa recorded her first 7-inch single and established a strong friendship with Elizeth Cardoso, living in her home between 1964 and 1970. During this period, she had the opportunity to live with and meet great names in Brazilian music, such as Baden Powell, Elis Regina, and Jacob do Bandolim. Her career gained national projection with performances at prestigious entertainment venues, such as Copacabana Palace, where she starred in the show "Sua Excelência, o Samba". She also participated in the 2nd International Song Festival in 1967, qualifying compositions by Edu Lobo and Paulo Gustavo da Silva Constanza among the finalists and taking second place for best interpreter, behind Milton Nascimento.

Neide Mariarrosa is remembered for her deep voice, compared to that of Dalva de Oliveira, and for her artistic versatility. She became the voice of composers such as Pixinguinha, Cartola, and Zé Kéti, interpreting songs that addressed social and racial themes, reflecting her origins and life experiences. Her only LP, "Eu Sou Assim", released in 1988, brought together compositions by artists from Florianópolis, celebrating her roots. The singer passed away on September 4, 1994, a victim of cancer, but her legacy remains as a landmark in the cultural identity of Florianópolis and in the history of Brazilian popular music, opening doors for future generations of artists from Santa Catarina.
