Biography

Nelly Martins, born Nelly Biato Gnatalli in Rio de Janeiro, was a multi-talented Brazilian actress, singer, and pianist who left a significant mark on the nation's artistic scene. She launched her professional career in 1952 by winning a talent contest hosted by the legendary Ary Barroso, which quickly led to numerous appearances on TV Tupi. Her vibrant presence in the golden age of Brazilian broadcasting expanded when she joined Rádio Tupi in 1956 and was later crowned Queen of the Musicians in 1959.

Alongside her radio and television work in productions like Grande Teatro Tupi, Martins built a notable musical legacy. She recorded six albums throughout her career, including the acclaimed 1968 LP Piano Duo in collaboration with her husband, the renowned composer Radamés Gnattali, interpreting classics of Brazilian music. Her repertoire also featured compositions by luminaries such as Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, and Tito Madi.

Following the death of Radamés Gnattali, with whom she had maintained a relationship since 1966 and married in 1978, Martins dedicated herself passionately to preserving his extensive musical heritage. Her life and career intertwined deeply with some of the most influential figures of her era, cementing her status as a revered cultural figure until her passing in January 2021.
