Biography

Antônio Gonçalves Sobral, immortalized as Nelson Gonçalves, was one of the most powerful and popular voices in the history of Brazilian radio. Born in Rio Grande do Sul and raised in the Brás neighborhood of São Paulo, his youth was marked by various jobs, and he even became the São Paulo state boxing champion before dedicating himself entirely to music. Pejoratively nicknamed "Metralha" (Machine Gun) because of his stutter, he overcame prejudice and the initial rejection of influential figures, such as Ary Barroso, to become the "King of Bohemian Life."

Throughout his vast career, Nelson established himself as the second best-selling record artist in Brazil, surpassed in sales numbers only by Roberto Carlos. His historic partnership with composer Adelino Moreira yielded immortal classics of Brazilian music, such as "A Volta do Boêmio" and "Meu Vício É Você." In addition to navigating samba-canção and bolero with mastery, the interpreter demonstrated great versatility by recording, in later decades, songs by artists of the new generation and national rock, such as Chico Buarque, Lobão, and the band Legião Urbana.

The singer's personal life was marked by dramatic overcoming, including a period of chemical dependency and an imprisonment in the 1960s that almost ended his career. However, with the support of his family, he managed to recover and resume his success, remaining active and productive until the end of his life. Nelson Gonçalves passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 1998, leaving a monumental legacy of more than two thousand recorded songs and a discography that is a fundamental pillar of vocal interpretation in the country.
