Nelson Pereira dos Santos was a foundational figure in Brazilian cinema, widely recognized as one of the chief architects of the revolutionary Cinema Novo movement. His career spanned over six decades, during which he directed landmark films such as Rio, 40 Graus and Vidas Secas, the latter being an acclaimed adaptation of Graciliano Ramos's famous novel. He maintained a deeply committed artistic vision that combined social realism with innovative narrative techniques, profoundly shaping how Brazilian culture and inequality were portrayed on the silver screen.

In addition to his prolific work as a director, screenwriter, and producer, he was an influential educator who helped establish cinema courses at prestigious institutions like the University of Brasília and the Fluminense Federal University. His intellectual contributions and dedication to national arts earned him immense respect, culminating in his election to the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 2006 as the first filmmaker ever to receive such an honor.
