Biography

Nelson Rodrigues was one of the most important writers, journalists, and playwrights in Brazilian cultural history, standing out for revolutionizing national theater with his realistic and innovative aesthetics. Born in Recife and based in Rio de Janeiro since childhood, he built a vast literary, journalistic, and dramatic body of work that addressed with raw brutality and originality the passions, fixations, and hypocrisies of the Rio de Janeiro middle class. His career in newspapers and on the stages forever transformed the country's literature and dramaturgy, immortalizing him as an implacable observer of society.

Throughout his career, Nelson wrote anthological plays that marked the modernization of Brazilian stages, introducing elements such as simultaneous planes of reality, memory, and hallucination. His theatrical production and his famous serialized novels and sports columns influenced generations of artists and intellectuals, engaging in dialogue with major figures of national culture such as Mário Filho, Orestes Barbosa, and Sábato Magaldi.
