Biography

Realcino Lima Filho, widely known as Nenê, is a highly respected Brazilian drummer, composer, and arranger born on February 5, 1947, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. A self-taught musician, Nenê began his musical journey at the age of twelve on the accordion, but soon transitioned to the drums by age fourteen, embarking on a professional career at a remarkably young age. His talent quickly propelled him into the vibrant Brazilian music scene, where he became known for his innovative approach to rhythm and composition.

Nenê's career is marked by significant collaborations with some of Brazil's most iconic musicians. He was a member of Hermeto Pascoal's band from 1978 to 1980 and Egberto Gismonti's band in 1980. His extensive discography includes work with artists such as Milton Nascimento, Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Paulo Moura, among many others. He also gained international recognition, performing and recording with notable jazz figures like Steve Lacy and Stan Getz. His unique style, which incorporates polyrhythmic elements and sophisticated harmonies, has made him a sought-after percussionist in both jazz fusion and Música Popular Brasileira (MPB).

Beyond his performance career, Nenê has also made significant contributions to music education. He lived and played in France for 12 years, where he developed and presented his method "Brazilian Rhythms by Nenê." This influential book, published in 1988, remains an authoritative source on Brazilian rhythms and has been taught in workshops across Europe and Brazil. Currently, Nenê continues to be an active force in music, performing with his own trio and mentoring younger musicians, solidifying his legacy as one of Brazil's most important jazz drummers.
