Biography

Neoci Dias de Andrade, widely known as Neoci de Bonsucesso or simply Neoci, was a pivotal figure in Brazilian samba music. Born in Rio de Janeiro on August 12, 1937, he was a composer and singer whose work significantly shaped the sound of samba, particularly in the late 20th century. Though his birth certificate listed his father as Romualdo Dias de Almeida, Neoci was also recognized as the son of the renowned musician João da Baiana. His early life and career were deeply intertwined with the vibrant samba culture of Rio de Janeiro, especially within the communities of Ramos and Bonsucesso.

Neoci is most celebrated for his role as a co-founder of the influential samba group Fundo de Quintal. Alongside other musicians, he helped pioneer a new style of samba that incorporated a wider range of instruments and a distinct rhythmic feel, moving away from more traditional forms. This innovative approach, nurtured within the influential Cacique de Ramos carnival block, laid the groundwork for what would become known as pagode. His contributions were instrumental in bringing this evolving sound to a broader audience, often through collaborations with prominent samba artists.

His songwriting prowess is evident in numerous compositions, some of which became enduring hits. Neoci's collaboration with artists like Dida, Jorge Aragão, and Almir Guineto resulted in songs that have become staples of Brazilian music. The song "Vou Festejar," co-written with Jorge Aragão and Dida, was famously recorded by Beth Carvalho and achieved significant commercial success, marking a new era for carioca samba. Sadly, Neoci passed away in 1981 at the age of 44 due to pneumonia, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire new generations of samba musicians.
