Biography
Nicolino Milano was a prominent Brazilian instrumentalist, composer, and teacher of Italian descent, born in Lorena on June 25, 1876, and passing away in Rio de Janeiro on October 1, 1962. Throughout his remarkable career, he established himself as a talented violinist and conductor, serving as a professor of orchestral practice at the National Institute of Music in Rio de Janeiro and directing the orchestra for the famous theatrical piece A Capital Federal. His exceptional musicianship even took him to Europe, where he lived for a period in Portugal and earned the prestigious favor of King Carlos I, who gifted him a violin and appointed him an instrumentalist of the Royal Chamber.
Aside from his pedagogical and performance achievements, Milano left an enduring legacy in Brazilian civic music by composing the melodies for several important state and municipal anthems. Most notably, he composed the music for the official anthems of the states of Pernambuco and Pará, as well as the former anthem of Rio Grande do Norte and the municipal anthem of Manaus. His contribution to official regional compositions remains an essential part of Brazil's patriotic repertoire.
In addition to his grand anthems, Milano contributed to the popular musical landscape of his era with various instrumental compositions that reflected the vibrant stylistic trends of the early 20th century. Works such as "Abacaxi", "Elegante", "Fado Liró", "Maxixe da Guarda Velha", and "Maxixe do Café" showcased his versatility in writing traditional dance forms and popular pieces. His work bridges classical training with popular Brazilian expressions, placing him alongside other historical figures dedicated to shaping the country's musical identity.
