Biography

Nilo Sérgio Santana de Oliveira, better known as Mestre Nilo Sérgio, was born in Rio de Janeiro on February 18, 1979, and established himself as one of the most important drum directors in the history of Rio's carnival. His journey in the samba universe began in his youth, at age twelve, when he joined the Boêmios de Irajá block. Later, he worked at Império Serrano playing the agogô, before planting roots in the traditional Portela, a samba school to which he dedicated a large part of his life and career.

At Portela, Nilo rose through various positions until reaching the highest leadership of the Tabajara do Samba. Appointed drum master in 2006, a position he held until 2025, he stood out for his technical excellence, rhythmic precision, and innovation, winning important awards such as the Estandarte de Ouro for best drums in 2010, 2012, and 2013, in addition to being awarded as a revelation in 2006. His reputation crossed national borders, making him a pioneer in teaching the art of samba at universities and workshops abroad, including stints in Japan.

In May 2025, Mestre Nilo Sérgio stepped down from leading Portela's drum corps following a decision by the school's new board. His departure generated great repercussion and commotion among samba dancers and carnival lovers, reinforcing his legacy in the association where he worked for two decades. Alongside renowned names in drum direction, such as Mestre Carlinhos Catanha, Nilo definitively marked his name in the history of Brazilian carnival.
