Biography

Nilson Matta is a renowned Brazilian bassist and composer, born in São Paulo on March 1, 1949. He moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1970 to deepen his studies on the double bass and quickly integrated into the country's music scene, collaborating in the 1980s with major names such as João Bosco, Hermeto Pascoal, Chico Buarque and Luis Bonfá.

In 1985, the musician took up residence in New York, expanding his international career and collaborating with prestigious artists like Joe Henderson, Yo-Yo Ma and Paquito D’Rivera. In the instrumental scene, he formed the acclaimed Trio da Paz in 1989 alongside Romero Lubambo and Duduka da Fonseca, in addition to joining projects such as the Brazilian Trio and Don Pullen's African-Brazilian Connection.

Throughout his career in jazz and instrumental music, Nilson Matta has recorded dozens of albums and shared the stage with icons like Leny Andrade and Antônio Carlos Jobim, consolidating himself as one of the great ambassadors of Brazilian music abroad.
