Biography
Nilton de Souza, better known as Niltinho Tristeza, was a renowned Brazilian composer and singer, born on October 15, 1936, in the neighborhood of Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. His passion for music led him to become a prominent figure in the Rio de Janeiro samba and carnival scene. Before dedicating himself fully to music, Niltinho worked as a linotype operator and an INPS employee, but his true calling was always tied to art.
Niltinho Tristeza began his musical journey in the carnival block Foliões de Botafogo, where he was part of the composers' wing. In 1971, he joined the Composers' Wing of the Imperatriz Leopoldinense Samba School, contributing memorable samba-enredos. His most famous composition, "Tristeza," written in partnership with Haroldo Lobo, became an anthem against the "blues" following the 1966 floods in Rio de Janeiro, gaining national and international prominence and earning him the nickname "Tristeza."
In addition to "Tristeza," Niltinho Tristeza scored other hits, such as the samba-enredo "Liberdade, Liberdade, Abre as Asas Sobre Nós," which led Imperatriz Leopoldinense to the title in 1989 and served as the opening theme for the telenovela "Lado a Lado." His work, which features over 150 songs recorded by various renowned artists such as Elis Regina, Toquinho, and Vinícius de Moraes, transcended borders, cementing him as one of the great names of Brazilian popular music. Niltinho Tristeza passed away on February 10, 2018, a victim of lung cancer, leaving an invaluable legacy to samba culture.
