A musician, composer, singer, and acoustic guitar player, he began his musical career in the 1960s, accompanying various samba artists in samba circles at Teatro Opinião, such as Moreira da Silva, Cartola, and Nelson Cavaquinho. His musical training includes studies with renowned teachers at the Museum of Image and Sound and the Villa-Lobos Institute, as well as refinement with Jaime Florence and Professor Bandeirante.

Throughout his career, Nilton Barros has composed songs that were recorded by major names in Brazilian music. Among his successes stand out "Laço de Cobra", "Sem Perdão" (in partnership with Jorge Aragão and Sereno), "Suor no Rosto" (with Dida and Jorge Aragão), "Alegria, Carnaval" (with Jorge Aragão), "Estranho", "Resistência Popular" (with Sombrinha and Sereno), and "Renascer" (with Jorge Aragão and Jorge Simas). Artists such as Alcione, Beth Carvalho, Ney Matogrosso, and Emílio Santiago have interpreted his compositions.

In addition to his work as a composer, Nilton Barros has also worked as a singer and acoustic guitarist. In 1988, he participated in the show "Verão Brasil", touring Spain and North Africa. In 2010, he performed in Paris with songs of his own authorship in French. In 2011, he released the CD "Karma", featuring guest appearances by Jorge Aragão and Zeca Pagodinho, and produced his first music video for the song "Yoga".
