Biography

Noel Rosa de Oliveira was a prominent Brazilian samba composer and singer, born in Rio de Janeiro on July 15, 1920. Growing up in the Salgueiro favela, he was immersed in the vibrant samba culture from a young age, often frequenting samba gatherings in front of his father's store. Considered the mascot of these gatherings, he began composing at the tender age of 13, writing his first song for a local carnival group.

His career in samba officially began when he joined the Composers' Wing of Unidos do Salgueiro, a significant samba school. Throughout his life, Noel Rosa de Oliveira contributed immensely to the genre, composing numerous samba-enredos (theme sambas for carnival parades) and popular sambas. His collaborations with other artists, such as Anescarzinho do Salgueiro, resulted in iconic songs that became staples of Brazilian carnival celebrations and samba music.

Noel Rosa de Oliveira's legacy is deeply intertwined with the history of samba and the Acadêmicos do Salgueiro samba school. His prolific songwriting and his role as a performer left an indelible mark on Brazilian popular music. He passed away on March 19, 1988, in Rio de Janeiro, leaving behind a rich body of work that continues to be celebrated and performed.
