Biography

Claudionor Santana, widely known as Nonô do Jacarezinho or Nonô Crioulo, was an influential Brazilian composer and samba artist who played a prominent role in the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. Deeply rooted in the Jacarezinho community in the North Zone of Rio, he became a legendary figure within the Unidos do Jacarezinho samba school. Notably, he achieved an extraordinary feat by winning the school's internal samba-enredo composition contest for 21 consecutive years, establishing a rare level of dominance in carnival history.

Beyond his contributions to traditional samba schools, Nonô achieved massive national recognition in 1982 when he co-wrote the hit song "Povo Feliz", popularly known as "Voa, Canarinho", alongside Memeco. Recorded by Brazilian national team football player Júnior, the track served as the unofficial anthem for Brazil during the 1982 FIFA World Cup, selling over 700,000 copies and propelling the composer into the broader music market.

Throughout his career, Nonô's compositions were interpreted by several giants of Brazilian popular music and samba. His notable works include "Pura Paixão", recorded by Beth Carvalho and Nãnãna da Mangueira, "Destruíram o Morro", performed by Zé da Zilda and Zilda do Zé, and "Se Não Fosse o Samba", recorded by Bezerra da Silva. His legacy remains tightly intertwined with the rich cultural history of the Rio de Janeiro samba scene, alongside contemporary artists such as Beth Carvalho.
