Biography

Novo Som is an influential Brazilian gospel pop rock band formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1983. Emerging as a worship group at the Baptist Church in Padre Miguel, the band released their debut album, Um Novo Som para Cristo, in 1988, eventually selling over one million copies throughout their extensive career. Their signature sound combines the striking vocals of lead singer Alex Gonzaga with poetic compositions that resonated deeply within the Christian music scene and beyond. Over the decades, Novo Som has performed across all Brazilian states and major venues, marking history with massive stadium performances such as at the Maracanã and Copacabana Beach, while also establishing themselves as pioneers of gospel romantic music with hits like Eu e Você and Escrevi.

The band achieved widespread national recognition following their second album, Pra Você, released in 1990, which propelled them into the upper echelon of Brazilian gospel artists. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, they maintained a prolific output, releasing acclaimed records through labels like NS Records and MK Music, including landmark albums such as De Coração, Meu Universo, and Herói dos Heróis. Despite lineup changes and occasional controversies, such as the departure of key members like bassist and co-founder Lenilton Silva and guitarist Sérgio Knust, Novo Som continually reinvented their musicality while preserving their core Christian message. Alongside contemporaries in the Christian music circuit, Novo Som remains one of the most enduring and respected groups in Brazilian gospel history.
