Novos Baianos was a seminal Brazilian musical collective formed in Salvador, Bahia, in 1969. The group was characterized by its communal lifestyle and a revolutionary fusion of psychedelic rock with traditional Brazilian rhythms like samba, frevo, and choro. The core lineup included Moraes Moreira, Baby do Brasil, Pepeu Gomes, Paulinho Boca de Cantor, and Luiz Galvão. Their artistic trajectory was deeply influenced by the Tropicália movement and a transformative encounter with the legendary João Gilberto, who encouraged them to explore their acoustic roots alongside their electric experimentation. \n\nThe band's masterpiece, 'Acabou Chorare' (1972), is widely regarded by critics as one of the greatest Brazilian albums of all time. It seamlessly blended Pepeu Gomes's virtuoso electric guitar with Moraes Moreira's acoustic bossa nova flair and Luiz Galvão's poetic lyrics. During the 1970s, the group lived together in a ranch in Rio de Janeiro, practicing a philosophy of counterculture and musical anarchy that defined an entire generation. Following the departure of Moraes Moreira in 1974, the group continued to explore instrumental and regional sounds before disbanding in 1979. \n\nThroughout the decades, the members found significant success in solo careers—notably Baby do Brasil and Pepeu Gomes—but reunited several times for major tours and recordings. Their legacy continues to influence contemporary Brazilian artists such as Marisa Monte and the newer generation of MPB performers.
