Biography

Carlos Vasques, known artistically as Nozinho, was a Brazilian singer and announcer who made his mark during the early days of the country's recording industry. Born in Macau, Rio Grande do Norte, on November 4, 1887, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1897, where he integrated into the bohemian scene of Rio and began his artistic career.

His musical journey began at Casa Edison, where he was hired by Fred Figner and became one of the label's first professional singers, alongside names such as Bahiano, Cadete, Mário Pinheiro, and Eduardo das Neves. In 1907, in addition to doing voiceovers for Casa Edison records, he made his first recording as a singer with the modinha "Em Noite de Seresta". Nozinho stood out as an interpreter of modinhas, being considered one of the great names in performing works by Catullo da Paixão Cearense.

In 1917, Nozinho decided to end his artistic career to dedicate himself to the legal profession, becoming a court officer. He remained in this position until his retirement. Nozinho passed away in Rio de Janeiro on March 20, 1962, at the age of 74, leaving a legacy as one of the pioneers of musical recording in Brazil.
