Biography

Odair José is one of the most emblematic names in Brazilian popular music, having consolidated his fame in the 1970s with songs that addressed everyday themes and frequently taboos. Originally from Goiás, the artist began his career as a teenage crooner before moving to Rio de Janeiro, where he received crucial support from samba artist Ataulfo Alves and producer Rossini Pinto to start his recording career. His career is marked by roaring, popular hits such as "Eu vou tirar você deste lugar" and the controversial "Uma Vida Só (Pare de Tomar a Pílula)", which faced censorship by the military regime under the justification that it went against birth control.

Despite frequently being labeled as a popular romantic music artist, Odair demonstrated experimental boldness when he released the album "O Filho de José e Maria" in 1977. Considered today by critics to be the first Brazilian rock opera, the record incorporated soul and funk sounds, featuring collaborations with musicians from the group Azymuth and singer Hyldon. Although it was a commercial failure at the time and generated rumors of excommunication by the Catholic Church, the work was rediscovered decades later by new generations of musicians and specialized critics as a milestone of aesthetic innovation.

Starting in the late 1990s, the singer experienced an artistic renaissance, being honored in tributes by national rock bands and collaborating with names such as Zeca Baleiro and Arnaldo Antunes. Odair José maintains a restless output, exploring everything from political criticisms in his independent albums to the use of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, reaffirming his position as a provocative and independent chronicler of Brazilian reality.
