Biography
Oliveira Francisco de Melo, known artistically as Oliveira de Panelas, is a highly respected figure in Brazilian popular culture, particularly renowned for his mastery of the repentista (improvisational poet) tradition. Born in Panelas, Pernambuco, he has been a resident of Paraíba for over three decades, earning him the titles of citizen of João Pessoa and Campina Grande, and the Augusto dos Anjos Medal. With a career spanning over 60 years, Oliveira de Panelas is considered one of the most important representatives of repentistas in Brazil.
His work often addresses social issues in the Northeast region, infused with lyrical romanticism, humor, and entertainment. He has authored 15 books, recorded 22 CDs and 11 LPs, both solo and in collaboration with renowned artists such as Otacílio Batista, with whom he performed for 23 years. Oliveira de Panelas has participated in numerous festivals, achieving first place in the vast majority of them. He is recognized for his strong, in-tune voice and for revitalizing cantoria with modern themes and innovative verse techniques.
Internationally, he has performed for distinguished figures like Fidel Castro and Pope John Paul II, and shared stages with Brazilian music icon Roberto Carlos on multiple occasions. He has also held significant cultural leadership roles, including president of the Association of Repentistas of Brazil and membership in the Culture Council of Paraíba and the Brazilian Writers' Union of Recife. Oliveira de Panelas continues to be active, with projects including documentaries and the "Ópera Nordestina."
