Biography
Olivinha Carvalho, stage name of Olivia Corvacho, was born in Rio de Janeiro on March 30, 1930. She began her artistic career at an early age, at five years old, performing on the Heraldo Português program on Rádio Cajuti. In 1936, she expanded her work to São Paulo, singing on Rádio Cosmos and at Teatro Boavista.
Her recording debut took place in 1940, when she recorded two compositions by Antonio Russo and Américo Morais for Columbia: the vira "Folhas ao vento" and the fado "Evocação". After an eight-year hiatus, she returned to recording in 1948 with the Star record label, releasing the marcha "O grande sultão" and the samba "Enquanto a saudade não passa". Starting in 1949, Olivinha Carvalho began directing her repertoire toward Portuguese music, establishing herself as an interpreter of fados and Lusitanian songs, although she also recorded marchas and sambas.
In addition to her musical career, Olivinha Carvalho acted in several Brazilian films, such as "Esta é fina" and "Fogo na canjica", both directed by Luiz de Barros in 1947. Her rendition of "A Mouraria" is considered one of her greatest successes. She was also the godmother of the Adult Folklore Rancho of Casa de Viseu in 1967, alongside Lima Abreu, demonstrating her connection to Portuguese culture.
