Orestes Barbosa was a renowned Brazilian composer, journalist, chronicler, and poet, born in Rio de Janeiro. Throughout his multifaceted career, he established himself as a prominent voice in Brazilian journalism and literature, heavily influenced by figures like Lima Barreto and João do Rio. His prolific writing captured the essence of urban life, crime, and marginalized figures in Rio de Janeiro during the early 20th century.

Beyond his literary contributions, Barbosa played a crucial role in promoting and documenting Brazilian popular music. He served as a judge in the first Samba School contest in 1932 and interviewed iconic musical pioneers such as Noel Rosa, Cartola, and Francisco Alves.
