Biography

Orlando Silva, born Orlando Garcia da Silva in Rio de Janeiro, was one of the most iconic Brazilian vocalists of the 20th century. Known by the moniker 'O Cantor das Multidões' (The Singer of the Crowds), he was a defining figure during the Golden Age of Brazilian Radio. Born into a modest family in the Engenho de Dentro neighborhood, he faced early hardships after the death of his father, a guitarist. A tragic accident in 1932 involving a moving tram resulted in the amputation of his toes and a lifelong dependency on morphine, a struggle that would eventually cast a shadow over his illustrious career.

His rise to fame began when he was discovered by the musician Bororó and introduced to the legendary Francisco Alves. Alves was so impressed by Orlando's vocal talent that he launched the young singer on Rádio Cajuti in 1934. Orlando quickly became a national phenomenon, breaking sales records and becoming the first exclusive star of Rádio Nacional. His recordings of classics like 'Carinhoso' and 'Rosa' are cornerstones of the Brazilian songbook, and his popularity was so immense that fans would famously tear pieces of his clothing, a precursor to the fan hysteria later associated with Cauby Peixoto. During his early years, he often sang the repertoire of his idols, including Carlos Galhardo.

Despite his massive success, the early 1940s marked the beginning of a decline fueled by health issues and substance abuse. After losing contracts with major radio stations and labels like Odeon, he struggled to reclaim his former glory. Although he attempted several comebacks and appeared on television in his later years, his vocal quality had changed. He passed away in 1978, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest technical singers in the history of Brazilian music, who set the standard for the modern interpretation of samba-canção and serestas.
