Biography
Orquestra Imperial is a Brazilian big band formed in Rio de Janeiro in 2002, with the primary objective of recreating the classic Gafieira Samba sound. The ensemble brought together a diverse group of musicians, blending established figures with emerging talents from Rio's vibrant pop scene. Among its notable members are Rodrigo Amarante, known for his work with Los Hermanos, Moreno Veloso, Domenico Lancellotti, and Kassin, all associated with the +2 project. The band also features vocalists Nina Becker and Thalma de Freitas, alongside seasoned musicians like Nélson Jacobina and the legendary samba percussionist and singer Wilson das Neves. This unique amalgamation of artists has been central to Orquestra Imperial's distinctive sound and appeal.
The band's repertoire is characterized by its eclectic nature, encompassing classic samba tunes, lesser-known compositions, and even unexpected covers, such as Sergio Mallandro's "Vem Fazer Glu-glu" and Yes's "Owner of a Lonely Heart." Their performances are known for their energetic and engaging atmosphere, often featuring special guest appearances from prominent Brazilian artists like Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, and Elza Soares, as well as international figures. Orquestra Imperial gained significant traction with their "Pre-Carnival Balls" in Rio de Janeiro, which drew crowds of over 5,000 people, and have since participated in major music festivals worldwide, including Portugal's Festival Sudoeste and Chicago's Millennium Park.
Orquestra Imperial's debut album, "Carnaval Só No Ano Que Vem," was released in 2006, receiving international distribution and critical acclaim. The band has continued to evolve, exploring fusions of samba with other genres, such as garage-rock, as heard on their second album, "Fazendo As Pazes Com O Swing." Their music consistently celebrates Brazilian culture while incorporating contemporary musical aesthetics, solidifying their position as a significant force in the Brazilian music landscape. The ensemble's ability to blend tradition with innovation, and to draw from a wide pool of talent, has ensured their enduring presence and popularity.
