Biography
Orquestra Lunar is a female musical group formed in 2005 in Rio de Janeiro, with the goal of giving visibility to women's voices and music. The idea arose from a request by producer Alice Brufato to saxophonist Daniela Spielmann to organize a female orchestra to celebrate International Women's Day.
The group consists of ten members: Áurea Martins and Vica Barcellos on vocals; Katia Preta on trombone; Monica Ávila and Sueli Faria on saxophones and flutes; Sheila Zagury on keyboards; Manoela Marinho on cavaquinho and acoustic guitar; Luciana Requião on bass; Georgia Câmara on drums; and Samantha Rennó on percussion. Throughout its career, Orquestra Lunar has performed in various cultural spaces and Rio nightclubs, such as Estrela da Lapa, Rio Scenarium, and Estudantina, in addition to participating in samba circles and important events.
In 2007, they released their first CD, titled "Orquestra Lunar", which featured a special guest appearance by Dona Ivone Lara on an unreleased composition dedicated to Áurea Martins, "Divina Missão". The album was nominated for the Tim Brazilian Popular Music Award. The group's repertoire covers various Brazilian and international rhythms, such as samba, choro, bossa nova, baião, and jazz, always featuring elaborate arrangements for the female instrumental and vocal lineup.
