Biography

The Orquestra Rio de Violoes, also known as Orquestra de Violões da AV-Rio, is a prominent Brazilian ensemble dedicated to the classical guitar. Founded in early 2009 by the Associação de Violão do Rio (AV-Rio), the orchestra emerged from a long-maturing idea among guitarists to create a space for ensemble practice in chamber music. Initially led by violinist Felipe Rodrigues until 2014, the orchestra is now under the musical direction of guitarist Klaus Grunwald.

The ensemble's repertoire spans various styles and historical periods, encompassing works from traditional classical composers like J.S. Bach to contemporary artists such as Roland Dyens and Edson Lopes. They also feature arrangements and original compositions by their members, highlighting Brazilian popular music composers like Edu Lobo, Ernesto Nazareth, and Waldir Azevedo. The Orquestra Rio de Violoes has released an EP with five tracks and has been recognized for its 10th-anniversary concert in 2019, which was documented with an audiovisual recording for YouTube.

This orchestra is a significant contributor to the vibrant classical music scene in Rio de Janeiro, offering a unique soundscape that blends the rich tones of multiple guitars. They have performed in notable venues and continue to expand their artistic reach, showcasing the versatility and expressive potential of the guitar ensemble within Brazilian music. Their work also connects with the legacy of Brazilian guitarists and composers, such as Baden Powell and Heitor Villa-Lobos, who have significantly shaped the country's musical identity.
