Biography
Os Caçulas was a Brazilian vocal group formed in 1962, initially gaining traction on the TV Tupi program "Clube Papai Noel." The original lineup featured Álvaro Damasceno (Alvinho), Vera Lúcia Carvalho, Yara Coelho, and Gilberto Santamaria. They released a single in 1967, followed by their self-titled debut album in 1968, produced by RCA Victor. The group was known for its harmonies and its contribution to the "Jovem Guarda" movement, often compared to international acts like The Mamas & the Papas.
In 1969, Gilberto Santamaria departed to pursue a solo career, and Mário Marcos, brother of Antônio Marcos, joined the group. That same year, they released their second self-titled album, which garnered critical acclaim and won the "Troféu Chico Viola" for the song "Prá Você." Their music often blended elements of pop rock, sunshine pop, and even flirted with psychedelic sounds, particularly on their second album. Other notable songs include "A Chuva que Cai" and "A Moça do Karmann Ghia Vermelho."
The group disbanded in 1970, but their music experienced a revival with the re-release of their two albums by the label Baratos Afins in 2003. The legacy of Os Caçulas is recognized within the context of Brazilian pop music, influencing and being compared to other vocal groups of the era such as Os Cometas and Trio Esperança, while also drawing inspiration from MPB ensembles like Quarteto em Cy and MPB4.
