Biography
Formed in São Paulo in 1966, Os Mutantes emerged as the most innovative and experimental force of the Tropicália movement. The classic lineup featured the creative trinity of Arnaldo Baptista, Rita Lee, and Sérgio Dias, later joined by bassist Liminha and drummer Dinho Leme. Inspired by international acts like The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, they combined psychedelic rock with local Brazilian music, pioneering the use of studio feedback, distortion, and handcrafted technical innovations created by Cláudio César Dias Baptista. \n\nDuring their golden era between 1968 and 1972, the band collaborated closely with major figures like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, participating in the seminal manifesto album 'Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis'. Their performance of 'É Proibido Proibir' with Caetano remains a legendary moment of counterculture defiance. After Rita Lee's departure in 1972, the group pivoted toward progressive rock before dissolving in 1978. They experienced a global resurgence in the 1990s and 2000s, leading to a prestigious reunion at London's Barbican Hall in 2006 involving Zélia Duncan. Today, led by Sérgio Dias, they are recognized internationally as one of the most creative bands in rock history.
