Biography

Oscar Bolão, born Oscar Luiz Werneck Pellon, was a highly respected Brazilian drummer and percussionist, known for his significant contributions to MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) and samba.

He began his musical career in 1975 with the group Coisas Nossas, dedicated to the work of Noel Rosa. Throughout his career, Bolão played with a vast array of renowned Brazilian artists, including Ney Matogrosso, Elizeth Cardoso, Nelson Cavaquinho, Marlene, Carlos Malta, Lenine, Nara Leão, and Dorival Caymmi. His expertise extended to various orchestras, such as the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, Orquestra de Cordas Brasileiras, Orquestra Pixinguinha, and the Banda de Câmara Anacleto de Medeiros.

Bolão was also an educator and historian, authoring the book "Batuque é um Privilégio," which explores the history and techniques of Brazilian percussion, particularly in Rio de Janeiro's popular music genres like samba, maxixe, and choro. He was recognized for his unique drumming style and his dedication to preserving and disseminating Brazilian rhythms.
