Biography

Osmar Procópio da Silva, known as Osmar do Cavaco, was born in the neighborhood of Caju, Rio de Janeiro, on January 10, 1931. Son of the musician Laudelino Procópio da Silva, Osmar had contact with music since childhood, accompanying his father to gatherings of chorões where they frequented great names like Jacob do Bandolim and Pixinguinha. This early immersion in the musical universe shaped his talent and passion for samba and choro.

At the age of 18, he moved to Marechal Hermes and, through Casquinha, joined the Velha Guarda da Portela, becoming a beloved and charismatic figure in the group. He was the first cavaquinho player for the Portela samba school between 1971 and 1987, playing a fundamental role in accompanying the interpreters during the parades. His contagious joy and smile were trademarks at parties and samba circles, where he masterfully performed compositions by his idols, such as Candeia and Paulinho da Viola.

Osmar do Cavaco formed a notable duo with Jorge do Violão, and his presence was frequently requested by Candeia in his performances. Besides being a musician, Osmar was the father of the composers Cesar and Serginho Procópio, perpetuating the musical tradition in his family. He passed away on February 5, 1999, leaving a legacy of joy, talent, and invaluable contributions to samba and Brazilian popular music.
