Osvaldo Ferreira de Melo was primarily a distinguished Brazilian jurist, professor, and historian born in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, rather than a full-time professional musician. Although his main academic career was dedicated to law, education, and historical studies regarding Azorean emigration, he also contributed to the cultural landscape through his writings on literature, music, and folklore in Santa Catarina.

Among his cultural contributions, he authored the song "Itaguaçu," which gained widespread recognition and popularity through the powerful voice of the iconic Brazilian singer Elza Soares.
