Oswaldo Passos Cabral was a distinguished Brazilian maestro, composer, and music educator born in Taperoá, Bahia. Demonstrating an early passion for music, he began his formal studies with the horn and later mastered the violin and viola, performing in salon orchestras and military bands. Moving to Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s, he became a violist for the Sociedade de Concertos Sinfônicos and studied under renowned masters such as Francisco Braga and José Siqueira, eventually graduating in composition, instrumentation, conducting, and folklore from the Escola Nacional de Música.
Throughout his illustrious career, Cabral made significant contributions to Brazilian classical and sacred music, most notably through his sacred suite and later oratorio "O Mártir do Calvário", which received high praise from critics and audiences alike. He also served as a celebrated music professor and bandmaster for the Brazilian Navy, successfully directing the Banda Sinfônica do Regimento Naval and later joining the Academia Nacional de Música. His deep dedication to symphonic and band music left an enduring legacy in Brazil's cultural landscape.
