Biography

Othon Fortes Russo (1925-1999) was a Brazilian songwriter, music producer and public relations professional, born in Rio de Janeiro. He became known in the 1950s for his compositions, which included samba-canções and versions of boleros, recorded by major names in Brazilian popular music of the time, such as Cauby Peixoto, Emilinha Borba and Agostinho dos Santos. He was also responsible for some of singer Ângela Maria's first hits, such as the bolero "Sabes mentir" and the samba-canção "Só vives pra lua".

His work continued to be recognized in the following decades, also reaching the Jovem Guarda audience, with compositions recorded by artists such as Wanderléa, Jerry Adriani and Roberto Carlos. Later, names like Elis Regina and Ney Matogrosso also interpreted his songs, demonstrating the longevity and versatility of his work. In addition to his career as a songwriter, Othon Russo worked as a music producer and public relations representative for the CBS/Columbia record label.

Othon Russo's legacy is marked by his ability to transition through different musical genres and by his collaboration with various artists who defined Brazilian music. His ability to create melodies and lyrics that resonated with the public, whether in the Radio Era, during the explosion of Jovem Guarda, or in interpretations by MPB divas, solidified his place as an important name in the history of musical composition in Brazil.
