Biography

Casimiro Abdon Irala Arguello, better known as Father Irala, was born in Asunción, Paraguay, on March 4, 1936, but built a solid career as a Jesuit priest, writer, and musician in Brazil. The son of a musician who composed the first sung mass in Guarani, Irala left an engineering career to join the Society of Jesus at age 20, later settling in Brazilian territory, where he was ordained a priest and developed a large part of his religious and artistic work.

His most striking contribution to Brazilian culture was the composition of the famous song "Oração de São Francisco de Assis", originally released in 1968 on the EP "Irala Canta". The work became an absolute classic of the national Catholic repertoire, being re-recorded over the decades by various exponents of Brazilian music, such as Fagner, Ana Carolina, and Father Fábio de Melo, in addition to being part of soundtracks for soap operas and high-profile events.

In addition to his original production on albums such as "Juventude e Alegria" and "Gente Boa", Father Irala played a strong cultural and pastoral leadership role by founding TLC Musical in 1970, which later evolved into the Oração pela Arte (OPA) movement. Through this initiative, he collaborated with figures like Father Haroldo Rahm and influenced the formation of various artists and personalities, leaving a lasting legacy in Christian music and Brazilian popular culture until his passing in São Paulo on December 1, 2024.
