Biography

José Fernandes de Oliveira, known artistically as Padre Zezinho, was born in Machado, Minas Gerais, on June 8, 1941. The son of a viola player who passed on his love for music, he moved during his childhood to Taubaté, in São Paulo. He entered the Dehonian fathers' seminary at age eleven and was ordained a priest in 1966, in the United States, adopting art and communication as tools for evangelization.

Throughout his career, he became one of the pioneers and biggest names in Christian music in Brazil, accumulating thousands of compositions recorded in various languages. His work marked religious history by introducing modern instruments, such as the electric guitar and drums, into liturgical chants. In addition to his prolific musical career, the priest established himself as the author of dozens of books on religious formation and as a communicator on radio and television broadcasting stations, participating in important milestones such as the reception of Pope Francis at the 2013 World Youth Day and receiving a Latin Grammy nomination in 2010.

Over the years, Padre Zezinho has collaborated and shared the stage with various exponents of Brazilian culture and music, including memorable appearances alongside Roberto Carlos. His priestly mission combined with musical dissemination paved the way for a new generation of religious artists and influenced names like Padre Marcelo Rossi, Padre Joãozinho and os Cantores de Deus.
