Biography
As Pastoras do Rosário are a vocal group formed in 2017 at the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos, in the east zone of São Paulo. Composed mostly of Black women in their sixties, the group emerged from shared experiences in the community's monthly celebrations, expressing a long-standing desire to sing and star in their own stories. Their music is deeply influenced by congadas, moçambiques, and sambas de roda, with a repertoire that includes original compositions and reinterpretations of artists like Carolina Maria de Jesus and Dona Ivone Lara.
The group released their debut original album, "Da Nebulosa ao Brilho", in 2023 through Selo Sesc. The work, directed by Renato Gama, features 13 to 14 unreleased compositions and guest appearances by various artists such as Luedji Luna, Lia de Itamaracá, Fabiana Cozza, Izzy Gordon, Carlos Casemiro, Sérgio Pererê, Tita Reis, and Jongo dos Guainás. The lyrics address themes such as sisterhood, strength, resilience, empowerment, and respect for ancestry.
As Pastoras do Rosário have participated in projects like "Goma-Laca: Cantos Populares do Brasil de Elsie Houston", alongside artists such as Emicida and Mateus Aleluia. The group has also performed shows and collaborations with names like Izzy Gordon and Lia de Itamaracá, celebrating Afro-Brazilian and female power in their performances.
