Biography

Paulo César Saraceni was a prominent Brazilian filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and actor born in Rio de Janeiro. Before his career in cinema took off, he played for Fluminense and was discovered by writer Otávio de Faria. Influenced by literary intimism, Saraceni became one of the key mentors and founders of the influential Cinema Novo movement in Brazilian culture, alongside renowned peers such as Glauber Rocha and Nelson Pereira dos Santos.

Throughout his extensive career, Saraceni worked across various creative mediums, starting as a film critic and theater assistant director in the 1950s before directing his own short films beginning in 1957. He further honed his craft by studying at the Centro Experimental de Cinema in Rome. His filmography includes notable works like Porto das Caixas, Capitu, and O Viajante, earning him significant accolades such as awards at the Festival de Brasília and the Moscow International Film Festival. He also directed projects for Italian television network RAI, showcasing subjects like Garrincha.

Saraceni passed away in Rio de Janeiro in April 2012 due to multiple organ failure following a stroke he suffered in late 2011. His legacy endures as a foundational pillar of modern Brazilian cinema, with retrospectives dedicated to his work preserving his contributions to the artistic landscape of the country alongside contemporaries like Nelson Pereira dos Santos.
