Biography

Paulo Coelho de Souza is a renowned Brazilian lyricist, journalist, and novelist, widely recognized for his immense contributions to literature and popular music. Born in Rio de Janeiro, his early life was marked by artistic inclinations and rebellious spirits, which eventually led him into experimental theater and journalism during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s. Alongside his literary career, Coelho left a profound mark on Brazilian culture through his songwriting partnerships with iconic musicians, most notably Raul Seixas. Together, they penned numerous hits that helped shape the landscape of Brazilian rock music, including enduring anthems like "Sociedade Alternativa". His lyricism also extended to major interpreters of Brazilian popular music such as Elis Regina and Rita Lee. In 1988, Coelho published his masterpiece novel, The Alchemist, which initially saw slow sales but ultimately grew into one of the most successful literary phenomena of the 20th century. Translated into numerous languages and breaking global records, the book cemented his status as a literary giant. Over the decades, he has continued to release best-selling novels, exploring themes of spirituality, mysticism, and human emotion, while earning prestigious international accolades, including a seat in the Brazilian Academy of Letters and recognition as a United Nations Messenger of Peace.
