Biography

Paulo Goulart, artistic name of Paulo Afonso Miessa, was born in Ribeirão Preto in 1933 and established himself as one of the greatest names in dramaturgy and the performing arts in Brazil. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he shone brightly in theater, television, and film, accumulating prestigious awards such as the APCA Trophy and the Molière Award. Married for sixty years to the renowned actress Nicette Bruno, he formed with her one of the most celebrated and enduring partnerships in national culture, creating theater companies and influencing generations of artists, including their children Beth Goulart, Bárbara Bruno, and Paulo Goulart Filho.

His artistic trajectory began in radio soap operas and on the pioneering TV Tupi in the 1950s, where he acted alongside names like Amácio Mazzaropi. Later, he joined remarkable casts on networks such as TV Excelsior, Rede Globo, and Record, participating in anthological soap operas like A Muralha, Vidas em Conflito, and Esperança. In the theater, he founded the Teatro Íntimo Nicette Bruno and performed in fundamental productions of the Brazilian scene, being directed by major names like Ziembinski and Antonio Abujamra, in addition to collaborating with playwrights and acting in classical and modern plays.

Beyond his legacy as an actor, playwright, director, and writer, Paulo Goulart stood out for his cultural and social commitment, conceiving the Teatro nas Universidades Program and receiving countless honors and tributes during his life and posthumously. The actor passed away in 2014, in São Paulo, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Brazilian television and theater. His artistic contribution remains alive in the memory of the public and of fellow craftsmen, such as Nelson Pereira dos Santos and Dias Gomes.
