Biography

Paulo Rafael (July 11, 1955 – August 23, 2021) was a prominent Brazilian musician, arranger, and record producer renowned for his distinctive guitar riffs and solos that blended the traditional music of northeastern Brazil with rock. Born in Caruaru, Pernambuco, he emerged in the vibrant musical scene of the 1970s as part of the Pernambucan psychedelic movement, known as Udigrudi, and famously joined the cult rock band Ave Sangria. Throughout his storied career, he became an essential musical partner to Alceu Valença, collaborating as a guitarist, arranger, and producer for over four decades and helping define the artist's signature sound on landmark albums like Cavalo de Pau and Anjo Avesso.

Beyond his enduring partnership with Alceu Valença, Paulo Rafael established himself as one of the most sought-after sidemen and producers in Brazilian popular music, recording and arranging for legendary acts such as Gal Costa, Geraldo Azevedo, and Zé Ramalho. He also maintained an active solo career, releasing instrumental albums such as Orange, Vagalume, and Alado, while continuing to contribute heavily to regional and national musical movements, including producing for Manguebeat artists like Chico Science. His legacy was cemented through numerous honors, including the naming of the instrumental stage at the Garanhuns Winter Festival in his memory.
