Biography

Paulo Thiago was a multifaceted Brazilian filmmaker and songwriter who maintained deep ties to the country's musical landscape, notably within the bossa nova movement. Born in Aimorés and raised in Rio de Janeiro from an early age, he studied classical guitar with Roberto Menescal during his youth and immersed himself in the vibrant cultural circles of the time. His early musical pursuits culminated in a major success when his composition "Queixa," created in collaboration with Zé Keti and Sidney Miller, won third place at the Record TV Festival of Song in 1965.

Although he later pivoted toward a prolific career in cinema—directing acclaimed features and founding Encontro Produções Cinematográficas—his artistic output frequently intersected with Brazilian music and culture. He directed significant documentaries and films celebrating national heritage and artists, including the 2005 documentary "Coisa Mais Linda: Histórias e Casos da Bossa Nova." As a cultural figure, he helped shape Brazilian cinema as a founder of the Brazilian Filmmakers Association and president of the Brazilian Association of Film Producers.

Throughout his life, Paulo Thiago remained connected to the artistic icons of his generation, collaborating and interacting with legendary figures of Brazilian popular music and culture. His contributions to both music and film earned him widespread recognition, including the Order of Rio Branco in 2006. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro in 2021, leaving behind a legacy that bridged the worlds of Brazilian cinema and musical history.
