Paulo Emílio Vanzolini was a renowned Brazilian composer and zoologist, born in São Paulo on April 25, 1924, and passing away in the same city on April 28, 2013. He authored iconic sambas and beloved Brazilian standards such as "Ronda" and "Volta por Cima," capturing the spirit of urban bohemian life. Despite not playing any musical instrument or reading sheet music, he meticulously crafted over 70 songs, often collaborating closely with musicians to bring his melodies to life.

Throughout his musical journey, Vanzolini became a central figure in the Paulista samba scene, forming a mutual admiration society and friendship with fellow composer Adoniran Barbosa. His compositions have been interpreted by some of the greatest voices in Brazilian music, including Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, and Nara Leão, cementing his legacy as a master songwriter. Alongside his artistic pursuits, he was a distinguished scientist who significantly advanced the study of herpetology and evolutionary biology in Brazil.
