Biography

Pedro de Apresentação Tavares Lima, known to the world as Pedro Lima, was a highly influential singer and musician from São Tomé and Príncipe. Born on April 11, 1944, in São Tomé, he became a central figure in the country's music scene, earning the moniker "A voz do povo de Sao Tomé" (the voice of the people of the island) for his outspoken political views and support of the MLSTP party following independence from Portugal.

HIs musical journey began in his youth with his family band, Os Leonenses, formed in 1968. Initially, with rudimentary instruments they crafted themselves, the band eventually acquired professional equipment and grew to include many family members. Pedro's fascination with rhythm led him to play the tumbas and later the bass guitar. Os Leonenses became his lifelong musical companions, performing with him until his passing on January 31, 2019, and playing at significant events across the islands and the mainland.

Lima's music masterfully blended genres such as samba socopé, puxa, rumba, and soukous, creating a rich and unique sound. His work, characterized by a gentle voice, delicate rumbas, and energetic puxas, reflected his political convictions and the social realities of his homeland. His album "Maguidala," released in 1985, is considered a highlight of his career, showcasing his ability to fuse São Toméan traditions with other African and Caribbean influences. Pedro Lima left behind a significant musical legacy, celebrated for his artistry and his role as a voice for his people.
