Biography

José Ramiro Sobrinho, known professionally as Pena Branca, was a prominent Brazilian singer and songwriter deeply rooted in traditional sertaneja music. Born in Igarapava and raised in Uberlândia, he formed a legendary musical partnership with his brother Ranulfo Ramiro da Silva, known as Xavantinho. Together, Pena Branca & Xavantinho became iconic figures of authentic caipira roots music, preserving traditional sounds amidst the commercial shifts of the genre.

Following Xavantinho's passing in 1999, Pena Branca embarked on a successful solo career with the encouragement of notable figures such as Renato Teixeira and Inezita Barroso. He released acclaimed solo projects, including the Latin Grammy-winning album "Semente Caipira" in 2001 and a heartfelt tribute titled "Pena Branca Canta Xavantinho." Throughout his career, he remained a steadfast guardian of Brazil's rural musical heritage, collaborating widely with artists who championed the rustic sound of the countryside.

Pena Branca passed away in São Paulo in February 2010 at the age of seventy, leaving behind a rich legacy of recorded works and performances. His distinctive voice and mastery of traditional instruments cemented his status as a pillar of Brazilian folk culture. His artistic influence endures among contemporary performers dedicated to keeping the authentic spirit of caipira music alive.
